I saw some structural biology positions in many pharmaceutical companies, but what do they actually do?
Is it the same as doing research?

Yes. They usually do research which involve experiment and computational design. However, the projects in the industry are not pure science. The are for applied science (drugs, biological agents for diagnosis and etc.).
