Materials made of metal and ceramic materials combine some of the advantages of metals and ceramics, such as toughness and bending resistance of the former, high temperature resistance, high strength and oxidation resistance of the latte
You can find such applications in manufacturing of metal cutting tool. The ceramic tools are often very brittle so their use is limited, so an addition of specific metal will lower this brittleness and so enhance their use.
A cermet is a composite material composed of ceramic as matrix and metallic as reinforcement materials. Cermet designed to have the optimal properties of both a ceramic, such as high temperature resistance and hardness, and those of a metal, such as the ability to undergo plastic deformation.
Dr. Zahraa, You are right 100%, thank you so much for your bright answer. I am seeking for more specific mechanical, chemical, physical properties for such amazing material., also I'd like to extend my knowledge to some extent about the new generation of engineering materials to make a connection with great and expanded filed of application. We as a mechanical engineers know that MECHANICAL ENGINEERING is ancient science and almost of related researches have been done and conducted and we are now tending toward MATERIALS ENGINEERING. This is my core idea about this classical question mentioned above!
it is vice versa: the ceramic is the reinforcement and the metal is the matric. As you say the metal has a high deformation. It would not make sence to have a matrix with low deformation and a reinforcement with low deformation. It allways should be the other way round.
So again as I wrote above: Cermets are composites out of ceramic materials as reinforcement in a metallic matrix..
Cermets are composites in which ceramic materials and metals join together, typically to give something with the high temperature performance or wear resistance of a ceramic and the toughness, flexibility, or electrical conductivity of a metal.
