I am new to Abaqus and currently working on Abaqus/Explicit for chip morphology in 2D orthogonal metal cutting (turning). In literature, they are showing some images at so and so feed. How can we give feed in 2D turning modelling. If work piece base is placed on X-axis then we can give cutting velocity(in X-axis) and DOC (in Y-axis)-as shown in Fig., but what about feed?
If it is 3D, feed can be provided in Z-axis?
Can any one help here? If above explanation is wrong, kindly discuss the correct way?
Dear Prudvi Paresi, you just came acros one of the limitations in 2D cutting simulations. If you model the main material removal plane with vc and DOC there is no feed in 2D simulations. When comparing the 2D results to real (3D) experiments I would advise you to plot Forces a.s.o. in Newton per unit width (feed), i.e. in normalized form. In an 3D Simulation you could consider the feed in a natural / direct form.
In 2D turning simulation you dont need the feed value. The cutting parameters that you need is the depth of cut and the cutting speed (relative speed between the material and th tool).
Martin Necpal said "In 2D cutting and plain strain is theoretic infinity." which would mean that also the cutting Forces would be infinitly large. But they are not. Not at all. As you reduce the Units in your 2D Simulation from real 3D to 2D ones you are calculating scaled Units (e.g. the vertical normal pressure or stress depends on per unit area, but now it is only per unit length as the depth or width is missing). You Need to check where and to what it applies.
I meant depth of cut is infinity because in 2D cutting plain-strain is set. We can not say there is not feed in 2D simulation. Feed is the some with undeformed chip thickness. 2D simulation cutting is usually in the orthogonal plane. see fig.
If width of tool is morethan width of workpiece,how can we provide feed in 3d modeling
