I have to Implement periodic boundary condition(PBC) on a RVE using Abaqus and validate the results. I have implemented the PBC in Abaqus , Im confused with the terms homogeneous B.C and Standard mechanics approach.
the terms refer to two different approaches to determine effective material properties in composites using a RVE.
One approach is called (asymptotic) homogenization, because its results are usally based in asyptotic expansion/approximation of the function of displacements. According to this method to determine the effective properties of the composite, one should inpose periodic boundary conditions opposite faces of the RVE.
The mechanical approach is based on the numerical simulations of tensile and bending tests applied to the RVE. This numerical simulations are mostly perfomed with FEM but other mathematical techniques, like anaytical methods, are used to this purpose. According to this method uniform boundary tractions or displacements are imposed on the faces of the RVE, and the average stress or strain field is used to determine the effective material properties of the composite.
