Many researchers use a single solvent, such as ethanol or methanol, etc. to obtain extract for determination of phenolic compounds by folin-ciocalteu. They named the results "total phenolic compounds", and I wonder if it is correct to say "total phenolic compounds". Wouldn't it be more appropriate to speak of "free phenolic compounds"? I found in the literature that there are varying types of phenolic compounds (free or conjugated), and they need sequential extraction with varying solvents and conditions. Thanks.
In my personal opinion, using the Folin test, correct would be" the total reducing capacity" because the Folin reagent can react with all reducing substances present in the sample (polyphenols, some amino acids, ascorbic acid, etc).
on the other hand, referring in particular to phenolic compounds, studies name call them extractable and nonextractable.
