Although large funds spent on scientific research and publications during the last years worldwide, the gap between the performed research and practical applications or innovations is significantly increased. So do you think funding the basic scientific research and publication is wasted money at the present time, and how to resolve the problem or what suggestions you have to make an improvement?
I believe some solutions may shorten this gap including:
- Integrated research/ Multi-field collaboration: For example, in Egypt hundreds of papers are released yearly on the beneficial health effects of phytochemicals by researchers in the faculties of Science, Agriculture and Veterinary medicine. However, because they do not work hand in hand with clinicians, these agents are never tested on humans and therefore they do not have clinical applications.
- Another approach is enforcing some regulations for translational research, which is the link between the basic science and its practical applications. These are needed to ensure systematic testing of all drugs/technologies that prove efficiency in basic research.
If one defines research as systematic approaches to hypothesis-testing, won't research first yield new hypotheses to be tested and only much later yield an application or innovation (after the original hypothesis and all subsequent hypotheses have been tested and retested}?

Funding the basic scientific research and their publication is not waste of money because application research is based on basic research only. If there is no basic research, we cannot think of any applications. So, both basic and application research should go together. Either of these will not stand alone and they depend on each other. I feel the percentage of funding on these may vary from country to country depend upon their economy. Poor countries more looking for applications and rich ones will look for both. I personally feel we need to spend 40% on basic research and 60% on applied research.
