You will want to chose such approaches if you want to treat the theoretical framework you develop from your litetature review as relatively fixed and test your assumptions in a purely deductive way.

Software supporting such an approach are the 'classical' statistics tools such as SPSS (or it's free dupe PSPP), STATA or R (if you want to go pro and start programming for your project)

You may however also consider a more qualitative approach, where you would develop a coding sheme based on your theory and then fine-tune it inductively on data you have gathered. In this way, theory building and testing are not seperate steps but continuously inform each other, see, e.g.,

Software, that supports you nicely for such endevors would be MAXQDA or NVivo.

Well, that's a way general question, but...

Content analysis, a method under the qualitative research methodologies, is mainly focused on documents. It actually can determine the particular themes and concepts within some given qualitative data like texts or images to analyze the meaning and relationships of such themes and concepts.

In short, it studies materials rather than people directly! For example, diary entries, tweets, magazines, or TV adverts!

You usually do it as follow:

*Identifying your RQs

*Selecting your sample of material (TV adverts, etc)

*Reviewing the sample of the material

*Categorizing what you are analyzing the material for (Coding process)

*And carrying out the analysis!
