Some research associates some diseases with either sleeping with lights on versus total darkness. This could be just a correlation without cause and effect relationship.

Total darkness is essential as it helps produce the melatonin, needed by the body. Melatonin is produced primarily by the pineal gland in the brain which helps regulate the relationship with light and darkness, day and night. Sleep is believed to fight cancer, diabetes and weight gain, but it needs to be done in total darkness.
Sleeping in total darkness is contemporaneous with natural circadian rhythm as previously noted. However, the question: "which is better?" Is quite subjective. I would like to point out that sleeping in light may have some "correlations" with some diseases, however sleep deprivation is more detrimental. I am saying this because there are people who can't sleep without the lights on. In this case, sleeping in light would be better for them rather than not being able to sleep at all in darkness.
