I think that first of all a teacher should necessary has a set of required human values. Because, if a teacher has vales and then only in true sense he can inculcate human values and content knowledge among his students. The aim of education is to make a human not to make a machine.
Human values, indeed. A good teacher may teach contents, but only the excellent teacher inspire their students in pursuing knowledge.
There are teachers who dominate certain topics, and still, all they do is to build and climb an imaginnary and intelectual step of superiority.
It is obvious that the teacher has more knowledge, and this inspire admiration by their students.
However, there is no point in despising and discouraging students. That show nothing more than a lack of virtues, and one without virtues should not be teaching anything.
I think that first of all a teacher should necessary has a set of required human values. Because, if a teacher has vales and then only in true sense he can inculcate human values and content knowledge among his students. The aim of education is to make a human not to make a machine.
There is an article by Robert Coe, Cesare Aloisi, Steve Higgins and Lee Elliot Major from October 2014: "What makes great teaching? Review of the underpinning research". I think that review might help to answer the question.
I think the human values are more important as the teacher would tend to focus on the student as a human being and not the subject content first. As explained in this piece:
In my view. First of all, it's important that a teacher has a well - balanced personality. It is not easy to be in contact with students who differ greatly one from another. Secondly, a good teacher must have the enough knowledge to teach his subject. Thirdly, the sense of justice, especially while dealing with teenagers. Last but not the lest, a good teacher must be demanding with his students. It has been shown that lenient teachers don't gain students' respect.
First, human values; second, content. Both contribute to the whole. The teacher's perspective of their role is critical in determining which takes precedence or how balance is achieved, i.e. reflective and reflexive practice. Great question and kudos to your son!
A good teacher must have a balance of these two characteristics. A sound knowledge is a must for every teacher. Unless he can not be a successful and efficient teacher. On the other hand, a teacher with high subject knowledge, but without human values, will never be an asset to the society. Hence, Both qualities are unavoidable characteristics of a socially committed teacher.
I agree with your son. Especially, I have experienced that the human relations are essential for students in primary schools. It is also interesting that parents asked me to teach other subjects in addition to mathematics. This is the reason why parents think that their kids could study more whatever I teach due to positive relationships between their kids and I.
As teachers, we need to interact with students to communicate content knowledge. Content is indispensable. Research has shown that effective teachers are seen as KNOWLEDGEABLE AND CARING (Thompson & Sheckley, 1997). Factor analysis showed 4 factors operating in best classroom learning experiences. THANKS.

It is both: Teacher = responsible parent+knowledge. It is always my stand that teachers are responsible parents but to the learning and acquiring knowledge of their students and by virtue of being a parent they treat their students with dignified human values of utmost love and respect.
To answer this question we may focus on the below aspect. Some philosophers gave many answers what teacher and student relationship is. We can not just understand their relationship only like 'subject-object', 'subject-subject ' way, there would be some more. A inspiring teacher is the alpha and omega for students' interest in teaching. A teacher has a well-balanced personality, and always provide students with appropriate support and encouragement.
