Thank you Olivier. Thi is really an excellent article.
But how do you think it would be possible do develop such characteristics as clarity of vision, resilience, creative and innovative, passion in public sector, generally characterised by formalism, hierarchy, political pressure,...So, work environment is important to idendify qualities of the best leadership.
Yes, Mahmoud, much is conditioned by the work environment. An organizational culture that conduces learning for change is more likely to facilitate the emergence of the leaders we are talking about here (and attract them in the first place). A Primer on Organizational Culture, available at http://www.adb.org/publications/primer-organizational-culture, says a little more about all this.
The term "best" is always in relative context. However to be the best in the particular context/situation, the leader should lead from the front through "team-building' phenomenon. At the same time leader should infuse the feeling of equality amongst its members while encouraging them through the mantra "Don't Walk Ahead of me, I many not be a good follower; Don't Walk behind me, I may not be a good leader: Walk alongside me, I am a good Team-player".
Some characteristics of the Servant Leader (Listening, Empathy, Healing,Awareness, Commitment to the Growth of People, Building Community) could help the leader to be with the crowd.
Dear George, It is indeed it indeed quite difficult to find a such leader who can go with the crowd as in the terminology of leadership, a leader requires the followers and not the crowd as the crowd may not be followers. When a leader follows 'Team-Building' approach, he may have to lead them, he may have to follow some one sometime, but ultimately when they win, the team wins. Regards.
Leaders are born & not made. For any social fabrics in any areas including the management compass leader are essential & it is this leadership which can make or mar the progress ,success ,under his zeal for achievement .
In the present century leaders are necessary & have their utmost importance but unfortunately sudden rise in his leadership if he has not carry out his introspection in right way ,right manner, right mode of moral conduct he can certainly make his stand as a leader in a dismal & sorry position .
With this it is very much certain that Honesty is best policy in every phase of areas so that progressive success can be achieved .The failure of leadership is mainly view due to frustration,in his action of his working which can become the root of non integrated approach resulting in frustration ,tension, worries & very often in order to establish his standing he can take recourse of all the mar practice which we are aware in this century
Leaders are made, for sure. The being born factor, into a certain family for instance, is part of the making. And, Marcello, the worst things to expect from leaders is that he or she has to be the best and has to be perfect.
The most important things for leaders to learn is to be humble and not follow the myth of being omnipotent. See: Sievers (1994) Management, death and life itself. New York: De Gruyter
