- The International Ocean-Colour Coordinating Group (IOCCG) is a world-wide organization dedicated to that issue. Their web site can be found here:

Under the heading "What we do", you will find a link to their publications, which contain lots of useful information and guidance.

- Since you are specifically interested in using MODIS data, you should definitely consult NASA's OceanColor Web site, located here:

Here again, you'll be able to acquire data and documentation about this problem.
