I am reflecting on Sanctuary practices in the digital space. What does it mean to offer Sanctuary online? What measures should be adopted? What could companies and policy makers do to make the digital space safer for refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented individuals? With recent discourses about net neutrality, this seems less and less an obtainable goal. Do you know other researchers reflecting on this issue?
Can you explain better what you mean with 'sanctuary'? Which kind of relation do you see between sanctuaries and migrants/refugees? An what is meant by 'online sanctuary'? Hi Silvia, thank you for your attention to my question! What I mean here is not related to Sanctuaries as places, but Sanctuary as practice. The practice certainly goes back to centuries and centuries ago in Europe as connected to Christianity, and exists and existed also in many other faiths and religious practices. More recently, the term was used to define the US movement in the 1980s that was shaped in response to the thousands
of Central Americans fleeing violence in their countries, particularly Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. It was a movement of resistance against Reagan’s policies, since the US was supporting the regimes of those countries as part of the anti-communist rhetoric of President Reagan. Accepting as refugees those fleeing repression would be accepting the role of the US in sponsoring that repression and violations of human rights. Originally a faith-based movement inspired by the peace and justice ethos of churches and synagogues in the US, sanctuary became a powerful grassroots movement against egregious government policies toward Central America. Recently, we have been assisting, in the US, to the re-emergence of sanctuary churches, campuses, cities, counties, and even states over the last few months - despite recent policies are targeting - or at least discouraging - these practice.
I think what I mean is better described by this article, that does not go much in depth in the digital part, though - which is what I am trying to explore right now. Thank you!
