I am trying to get a feeling for long term population dynamics of some birds using Christmas Bird Counts and Breeding Bird Surveys. I would appreciate any suggestions, citations and comments.
Good question. You'll probably have a few options depending on what exactly you want to do. Have you looked at this website for BBS data: http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/bbs/trend/tf11.html. That's probably a good place to start. If you've already looked there and it doesn't help much, I might be able to suggest some other ideas or citations at least.
Hi Andrew, I can suggest you my publication where I analyzed Bird Observations of American crows in southern Québec using spectral analysis. Spectral analysis helped me capturing seasonality in crow density dynamic.
The Analysis of Crow Population Dynamics as a Surveillance Tool, A. Ludwig, M. Bigras-Poulin, P. Michel Transboundary and Emerging Diseases, Volume 56, Issue 9-10, pages 337–345, December 2009, DOI: 10.1111/j.1865-1682.2009.01090.x
In the paper, you may also find references to other papers like the study realized by Ladeau, who has analyzed Christmas bird counts.. Ladeau, S. L., A. M. Kilpatrick, and P. Marra, 2007: West Nile virus emergence and large-scale decline of North American
One option is time-series analysis, which allows you to fit covariance structures, but also examine for trends, or even cross-correlations with explanatory variables (how about weather data?. For an example, see http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0067093
The statistical source is Yaffee R (2000) Introduction to time-series analysis and forecasting. Amsterdam: Academic Press. 528 p. , I found that book accessible.
Thanks Andrew, Antoinette and Jon for great suggestions and citations. You guys gave me more ideas to utilize my data set beyond my initial expectations. Thanks again.
in the study of population dynamics of birds should be considered a dynamic spatial structure of bird populations. very often in the mathematical analysis of the dynamics of the bird population in general does not make sense, since a change in the size (population density) does not reflect the change in the number of individuals, but only their redistribution over a large area.
