We are planning to resuspend a fungal culture with phosphate buffer and add an energy source to sustain life while removing other compounds in a medium that might interfere with the possible degradation analysis of a compound.
We are thinking about using glucose but wouldn't it promote further growth rather than just sustaining the life from the current culture?
... depends on the organism. In our hands, with mucoralean fungi, maltose is normally a good choice. Growth is slow, but production of metabolites goes on.
Johannes has a valid point. It depends on fungal organisms. However; generally speaking Cryopreservation is other option that may be useful for the purpose as intended. Cryoprotectant agents, such as glycerol or dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) is helpful in maintaining the viability of the organism without degradation the biochemicals produced by that particular organism.
Provide it with a carbon source only and no nitrogen source. Only carbon source help fungi to sustain life with continued bioconversion..
is it just maintenance or else some kind of study? answers would vary for each... n yes ofcourse it varies from fungus to fungus..
A base mineral medium with a carbon source but no N provided. It would depend on your final objective though. What do you mean by sustain life? Keep it viable or metabolically active? Those are different sistuations.

as others have noted it depends on the fungal species. I have used citrate in the past as it slots neatly into glycolysis/respiration and is a pretty universally utilised compound in aerobes. Bushnell-Haas is a simple minimal medium (but don't overcook it or you precipitate some salts) and it is easy to add any carbon source as sole source. We have also had some success using 0.1% yeast extract - but beware as it makes the medium complex and adds nitrogen.
