I was working in the field of bladder and bowel health, and had been inspired by the research by :
Ashworth, P. D., & Hagan, M. T. (1993). The meaning of incontinence: a qualitative study of non‐geriatric urinary incontinence sufferers. Journal of advanced nursing, 18(9), 1415-1423.

This focused on urinary incontinence, so wanted to do a similar piece of work on faecal incontinence.
I was fortunate and received funding and excellent supervision, so with the help of both of these, I was able to look into what it was like to live with faecal incontinence.
After I had finished, as I had always wanted to do, I returned to the department from whence I had come and worked as a nurse practitioner until I retired. But I both wrote up my findings for publication; on one of there articles, one of my supervisors co-authored with me. I also carried out a 5 and a 10 year follow-up, while I worked in my nursing role, which I also wrote up for publication.
Having done the research opened doors; I spoke about my research, sometimes at conferences and was involved in the formulation of the (first) NICE Clinical Guideline 61 (CG61) in 2008; it was reviewed in 2015, and I had long retired by then!
I expect this will be different to many other RG members, but it has started your discussion off.

In my case, nothing inspired me to proceed with research. My entry in this world was by an accident. I got admitted into a research oriented fellowship program (equivalent to a Ph.D.). I had paid a huge amount of money as fees. There was no escape route for me but to complete it, collect the certificate and come out of the institute. When I got myself admitted to this research program, I had no idea about research. Today, I think, probably I would not have got myself admitted if I had even the slightest idea about it. Wise men say that ignorance is bliss and I proved them correct with my life.
Your second question is that what motivates me to continue. Well, I realized after long years of research that this is probably the only thing that I know a little bit about. My knowledge about most other things in this universe is so poor that I was confident that if I went to do something else, I would eventually get thrown out of there. So in my case, you can say that lack of options played a major role.

When my father was trying to develop a mine a "technical expert" tried to trick him into believing his mineral claim was worthless (so he can drop it and the expert can claim it for himself). If I had the knowledge, I thought, I could advice my father whether it was good or worthless.

I have also started teaching at very early stage and my whole higher education was based on the model of teach to get taught. I have learned more during the teaching when compared to the learning by my teachers and professors.

In circumstances where someone has to teach but is not knowing the subject/topic properly, still there is a hope. One can read, understand and practice and then can teach. Actually, this is the way usually anyone follows in order to teach.
So, it is not necessary that teachers know their subject well, but yes they are the good readers and hard workers.

Yes, that's true. I am confident that most of us believe in the evidence based facts. It is something very common with the researchers that we used to adhere to the facts and figures more often. Even we are reluctant to the repeatability of them too.Good to know about your path of truth.
So, this question about motivation relates to common sense. what we are seeking for ? There was a time I seek for muscles, so I had to go to the gym. Another time I was seek to get wise, like Socrates or Marc Aurelius-the principle of seeking and finding, drives me to psychology. So, if I start a research- the whole process- seems like a connection to a higher field of Energie (information). There is no Seeking anymore, ist like a never ending string of finding. A process the most of us called Understanding. Some will say, there is a huge difference between science and truth. My final Answer so, my motivation to get up and continue to my research is to create knowledge and in my sophistical understanding, its the only good.

How lucky you were to be mentored by your late supervisor. Looking back, I can also remember people who left a lasting impression on me; but not all from the field of research.

Omkar - I am doing research in the field of inorganic chemistry since 1976, i.e. over 40 years. Even since 1970, when I was still in high school, I was fascinated by chemistry, because we had a very good chemistry teacher in school. Soon I had a chemical laboratory in the basement of my parents' home. My first scientific paper was published in 1976 at the age of 22. I always wanted to become a chemistry professor, which eventually came true in 1995. Thus I am really lucky that I could make my hobby into my profession. I continued to be fascinated by synthetic chemistry, because we routinely synthesize new chemical compounds which no other human has ever seen before. It's regularly a very exciting moment. We do what is normally called "basic research" which is not intended to have an immediate impact or applications. However, quite often it turns out that our results are useful for other researchers.

It all depends on how we define our research. Research has been colonial as it has been separated from the community. However, if we are able to reclaim the meanings of research from the community, to the community, and by the community, it can become a celebration. Community-led research is relational responsibility. Community-led research can shape us who are we as a researcher and what we should be. Community-led research creates many possibilities for transformation. It not only creates knowledge but also empowers both researcher and participants. I believe that first of all you have to have a great vocation for research work Only in this way can we take responsibility for the content that we are going to offer to the research community in general. The research work must also be attractive and interesting with clear intentions of being able to contribute to advancing the knowledge of the disciplinary Sector to which we are dedicated. It is also important that we not only conceive theoretical works that would only find a physical location in a library, but that they be "living" research works, circulating and interacting in multidisciplinary environments.

As human beings, it's in our nature to think and explore hidden things. In our religious book (QURAN) it is also mentioned so many times that" do you not seeing to the camel, how it is created, and many more) so being a lover of science it gives me the ignition to start and explore unexplained things. for this, I select the science subject because of my own interest and its applicability. during my master's, I have done research in the domain of biochemistry but it is computational, and now I am doing my research in human welfare project in wet lab.
