We want to establish a Digital Forensics Lab. A lot of software and hardware tools are available from different vendors and deciding which tools to consider is difficult. What necessary precautions should we take in establishing such a Lab? What is the most reliable source where one can obtain reliable information on what should be in a Forensics Lab and where the necessary tools should be obtained from?
The requirements depends on the type of cases or academic focus. The following is not a comprehensive list but should get you started.
1)Write blockers should be on the top of the list.
2) forensic work stations capable of booting multiple platform operating systems
3)Data carving analysis tools for mobile and standard OS's
4) evidence bags. Standard for hard disks and solid state drives and shielded for mobile phones
5) Faraday cage(they come in small boxes) for mobile phones
6) Lots of disk space for large evidence scenarios
This is standard and unless you delve into something specific (Raid arrays, Special embedded systems, Moving platters, etc.). Other tools such as password recovery and encryption software can also be contemplated.
