As in the case of Newtonian Physics, the gravitational potential is negative and hence the gravitational force is attractive. A consequence is that this negative value leads the singularity in GR but although gives the correct results in the Classical results like light bent, etc. But if we take (suppose) or say somehow this potential value be positive, what will be consequences for classical tests?
Total energy is positive when the orbit is not bound,
ie. it is hyperbolic instead of elliptic.
The gravitational potential is always negative.
With sufficient kinetic energy or speed, you escape the planet.
If the gravitational potential were positive, there would be no bound systems.

Even with extremely massive astronomical
objects the answer remains the same. The mass of
binary systems observed goes well above that of
earth-moon say. Black holes have every indication of having a negative potential energy. This qualitative trend will continue with GR.
It takes very massive to get significant deviation from Newton, but the qualitative behaviour is the same with respect to gravitational potential. It finally gets so negative, nothing can escape.
