Similar case:

When La (Tm=920 dC) is added to molten Mg (Tm=650 dC) the intermetallic of Al11La3 (Tm>1240 dC) forms. La is highly reactive, so the intermetallic forms due to a chemical reaction between La and Mg.

I don't know about your experimental conditions, but the intermetallics you named may form if there are reactions possible to happen from thermodynamics and kinetics viewpoints.

The thermochemical and thermodynamic properties of melts of the binary Bi-Yb system are strong function to the concentration of Yb and melt temperature since these variable will produce different mixing enthalpies of melts which in turn effected the formation and formation stability of certain high melting complex compounds likeYb4Bi3 and Yb5Bi3 (as you stated in your question) by means of chemical reactions. Hi,

Check the binary phase diagram of Yb-Bi and you can find lot of information. Usually with decreasing temp, solubility is decreased. During this process it reached a point where intermetallic formation is feasible and it is formed.
