Let say I have graphene flakes and graphene oxide flakes. I mix both of them in methanol agitate for a while (sonicated with ultrasound).
Will the graphene change to graphene oxide? Will redox reaction occur?
Due to both graphene are referred to as single layer materials, the main changes of composite may be expected in dispersion, surface area, optical and thermal properties.Sonication may causes oxidation of graphene.You need to investigate your materials(graphene,graphene oxide and graphene/graphene oxide) by XRD and FT-IR techniques to evaluate the expected changes.
Assuming graphene and graphene oxide powders in 1:1 wt% in 100% methanol..
In unagitated state: graphene will rapidly agglomerate to graphite and settle down.. whereas graphene oxide will remain dispersed..
now if you sonicate this mixture.. you will end up with graphene oxide/graphite nanocomposites..
