I agree with Dr Ganesh . Additional point is on graduates aspirations, the type of graduates you are producing. To increase graduates employablity, we are encouraged to design a flexible curriculum, using the term fluid and organic curriculum where certain percentage of the structure is open for electives (up to 18 Cr) , with the intention to develop broad based knowledge among the graduates and better marketability.
In addition to Dr. Ganesh submission, the starting point of a curriculum design is a good understanding of the objectives of the programme, which should normally be within the overall vision of the university or institution as well as the framework of the monitoring or governing agency. Secondly, it is important to have a few questions in mind. For instance, Is it meant to correct a deficiency in similar programmes elsewhere? Is the curriculum meant to provide particular skills or expertise in a select industry? Is it practice or research oriented? What is the manpower and equipment available? What level of financing is available? Are there prospects for continuous funding etc. When these questions are taken into consideration and firmly addressed, you will likely draw up a good curriculum. However, no curriculum is absolute, they may be just adequate at the first instance. A Curriculum is updated from time to time as the society evolve to meet with specific or new challenges. I hope this helps
Curriculum is a blueprint or a map action predicting the HOW and the WHAT of learning. Notably, a university curriculum needs to consider several stages. The first stage is all about the targeted audience. To plan optimally, it is essential to know who the audience will be. By doing a critical needs analysis , we can specify the goals and objectives of the program asd determine how they are going to be actualized. In the second stage, we should specify the methods of presenting content established based on goals and objectives. Here, the teaching strategies are carefully identified (e.g., Socratic method, group discussion, cooperative learning, etc. ). Next, we should carefully ascertain the logistics required for actualizing the program. Before starting the program , we’ll need to consider all the logistics including the faculties and classes where training will be held, the pieces of technology and equipment , the materials necessary, etc. In the fourth stage, we should define an evaluation system including both formative and summative assessment carefully examining the quality of all the working stages throughout the curriculum development and the effectiveness of the stages befor the implementation. It is essential to gather feedback from other experts to hear their opinions about the quality of the program in order to adjust or improve the caveats and shortcomings.
Any designed course must have assessment methods in mind. Not only what objectives but also how best to frame them, and what methods are required to demonstrate students learning.
At Columbia university there's a core curriculum as part of undergraduate. I took that and made it my target by completion of high school. Now, what would k-12 look like to facilitate that. What kinds of teachers and students and then in the adult component two years should bring a person to college completion. How?
A benefit is observation and real life teaching. I advocate also volunteering. I've worked on so many projects and levels that I can put together a curriculum in framework in a short time.
Once you have framework then you need interior---classes which graduate in ability, assessment and then administrative interfaces.
Start with four core areas then branch out to eight to accommodate other disciplines and keep filling in the overall map based on intended outcomes first in a broad spectrum then narrowed down to year finally classes and lessons. Lessons is hardest because it is subjective how many lessons it takes to learn algebra but you night be able to approximate a year for that stage of math and then move forward.
The University aspires to be a globally recognized Center of excellence in the field of education and research. It strives to achieve this by introducing innovative job oriented courses. The University focuses on the student community to imbue them with passion for knowledge and creativity and to promote sustainable growth in academic resources, student placements, holistic human development with a strong conviction for professional ethical, social and environmental issues.
By keeping in mind all these mentioned factors a university design a curriculum.
