I'm aware that Biobase is part of the Bioconductor project and that various other packages use it. But what are the functions of this package, and what kind of data do we use it for?

You could visit the Bioconductor site (https://www.bioconductor.org) which reveals that Biobase is part of an ecology of packages that support genomic analysis. See https://www.nature.com/articles/nmeth.3252
Actually, if you had asked how you should analyse genomic data, then a quick search would have brought you to bioconductor. But you were trying to find the question based on the answer, which seems mighty unusual…
