I'm looking for articles and official documents related to the issue "usual environment" in tourism and how countries define it. I can only find information in Spanish.
Has anyone investigated this matter before? Does anyone know what "usual environment" is about in their country?

Usual environment can be defined from a distance from where you are. You can look at it as the radius from the core. According to Becken (2009) in domestic tourism all trips within 40km are within one's usual environment.
In international tourism (where one has to cross political boundaries), the source country becomes usual environment for the tourist (Check WTO definition of Tourist).
In short, the definition of usual environment to me is contextual and subject to how the one defining it wants to use it. Hope you find this helpful
Hi Forbes, as I read before in UNWTO documents, each country establishes what they understand as "usual environment". In Canada, for instance, this concept is defined as the same way as you did. However, in Spain Tourist Satellite Account identifies it as the boundaries of each municipality.
Due to this, I need to found different definitions in order to determine a standard.

The "usual environment" for a tourist experience excludes "extreme tourism" promotions: e.g.; dark tourism, "high risk" adventure tourism, space vehicle tourism, 666 highways tourism, and the like.

To the extent that "the usual environment" is synonymous with "the normal environment," and modeled for discussion purposes by using a normal curve, then any tourism event experienced in the tails of the normal curve would be abnormal or "extreme."
