What is the difference between RG and other existing medias?

RG means the following to me"
1. It is a great forum for researchers and intellectuals to share their research and ideas, and is a kind of a peer review of ideas through a voting system. The best part is that we get the review from peers from collateral disciplines as well.
2. It has helped in translating theories and concepts in simple and digestible propositions as the idea contributors will have the pressure of their ideas being down voted. So they try to simplify the questions that every one can possibly understand. Kurt Lewin has rightly said that "There is nothing more practical than a good theory." RG helps this process immensely.
3. RG has made virtual academic networking much simpler. This helps in widening one's horizon of knowledge.
4. An unpleasant thing happening at RG is unilateralism on the part of editors, which can never be acceptable to academics. Some one has rightly said that: "God created universities for celebration of ideas, but repented having done so as HE lost control over them (Universities). The beauty of a university is its autonomy and the wisdom of thinkers and researchers who create the new knowledge.
It is something strange that RG has become a system of regulation.
RG mean a lot of things to me. It is " Linking Platform Collaboration to Professional Reputation". At the same time, it means to me harworking and persistense.
I had recently made a study on RG and its scores (details available at: https://www.researchgate.net/post/How_important_are_RG-Scores_and_impact_points ).
RG scores could be inspiring to many. But I find, there is still scope for improvement; the system has to be made more robust. Many of us should know carefully, RG scores fluctuate (so fast); how a close circle/ group of academic friends (?) can make changes in RG score (if they so wish).
But we should look at the positive side and the enormous benefit it provides.
@Abedallah, You have earned downvote so fast! It is not fair! Regarding the thread, RG is fine portal for sharing papers, Q&A, find friends, establish new cooperation, interactions!
What worries is fact that some people vanished, their profiles were suspended! It makes me confused why it is happening, no explanation!!!
RG scores means all what you have mentioned and active life communication between scientists and researchers. Additional thing is that Universities compete for achieving better rank for high RG scores affiliated to their faculties.
ResearchGate means a credible site for networking for scientists internationally!
It also mean a reputable international ranking and/or rating system for scientists!

I agree with Debi and the rest of the colleagues that said RG is a great platform for intercommunicating ideas and research work, but as it was noted above there is a bit of a worry related to the bowdlerization that becomes a more frequent phenomenon on behalf of the RG administrators. Questions that are deleted with out any particular reason and accounts that suddenly vanish. I had personally experienced this by posting a question on down voting and whether it is something that damages the RG community, creates more problems than helps users to express their opinion about a post... and it was deleted without even asking.
It is my belief that RG can become a great social platform for scientists and in order to achieve this task the people that control this social network should be more flexible to the community that uses their creation.
RG is a platform which has enabled the researchers across the globe to see, share and explain their work with the rest of world. I see it as a window which has led the air of sharing and viewing and collaboration of work from the environment of research.

For me the researchgate is a world wide social scientific media. It combines social and scientific activities in a single platform. You can get wide exposure to your research and thinking outcomes.The work of the others becomes transparent and visible to you when it is published in the researchgate as it is an open excess platform. You can discuss any interesting subject with your peers and colleagues by questions and answers.All what you produce and introduce bears your name and it can be accessed through internet search.
From the social point of view, you are followed and you follow your colleagues internationally. I get invitations from them and messages that make me feel that the people are relatives irrespective of their differences and boundaries.
I personally benefited much from the researchgate. As a scientist, it is the preferred media for me.
Irrespective of the some deficiencies that can be treated , i am satisfied with Researchgate and i am proud of many friends and colleagues that i have on the researchgate.
A large network of social science in general. The Facebook of researchers.
My association with RG is just three months old. I would add the following in addition to what I said in the previous post to t question:
1. I think, it was my loss that did not know till recently that a forum like RG existed. i thanks DR NP Singh, my colleague, who brought this to the notice of my colleagues including me.
2. I must admit that RG is also a forum where I have met some of the most brilliant and knowledgeable people. I consider myself fortunate in this regard.
3. As in case of Graham Burnett, I also got answers to some of my questions that had been exacerbating my intuitive uneasiness immensely. Perhaps, that would never have been possible without RG.
4. I have seen that many people have become addict to RG; it is easy for other regular users to make out who all are in this category. I must candidly admit that I am very much in this category.
5. Some colleagues for whom I have the highest respect have been suspended, which is a big shock. I have never expected that such a thing would ever happen. For, no one knows why? This makes me suspect the truth about all the above 4 points I have written.
Also, I wonder, what would happen to my addiction the day I am suspended without knowing, why?
RG for me is a 24/7 conference in which I meet other intellectuals and participate in its enriching activities. Hope the RG admin will find ways to keep and improve its scientific value. Thanks. @AlDmour.

This question has been prated and re-phrased once and again in RG. To me, RG is a pleasure. Not a task, not a fever for earning a higher score. A pleasure to meet intelligent friends and challenge to many questions. To me without pleasure RG would just be boring...
I consider that RG is a positive phenomenon for researchers. It is also true that there are some details that can be improved in RG. The following assertion: “Some colleagues for whom I have the highest respect have been suspended …” is a big negative surprise for me.
I believe that human beings should act according to some “logic”. Recently I heard the following phrase: “If you got a service and you don’t pay for it, then you are the product”. Having in mind that all of us depending on our “activities” in RG are helping some people to do their business or at least to have a remunerated job, one may ask who will make harm to his own business? In any case it will be beneficial for RG to give some explanation if the above information is true or not.
ResearchGate should enable every scientist to connect and collaborate!

I joined RG about 3 months back and has been seriously taking it for the last month or so. It has been a wonderful experience for me because it helps to interact with so many people from diverse fields with varied experiences that will enrich my research as well as my life. In fact RG is the one that I normally look at in the early morning before going to office. It is not perfect, but there are many aspects which interest me. I am not into any of the social networking sites, except LinkedIn. But somehow LinkedIn did not live up to its promise.
Of late because of the unilateral action of RG it has become a little unpleasant, and I am not too enthusiastic at this time. I hope it gets remedied soon and we are back to our normal processes.
Dear Abedallah, I think RG is inspiring scientific platform, with bright scientists around. That's the strongest value for me. However there are issues making me much uncofortable as social exclusions performance on RG, which is, as I observed, also unpleasant for scientists rejected from this scientific circle, I mean - whose profiles were suspended. This seems much unfair, also because these scientists not received any explanations of causes.
Dear Abedallah, you are asking about the kind of media RG is ? - so I answer: RG is interesting in assumptions and opportunities to exchange knowledge, experiences, views and deeply foggy in performances.
But I never regret that I'm in, even though not knowing for how long ? So I just decoded key value for RG staff as organizational culture - TEMPORALITY, Dear All. Sorry, to say that.

RG is good as a place where I can ask questions related to my research, and questions related to my life as a science teacher. It's great because my friends have made it great. When I first joined RG, there were some people who were not so pleasant. It took about 8 months for me to find great friends on RG. They send me articles for research that I couldn't have obtained otherwise. If we want RG to be great, let's put in effort and concern for our friends.
I agree with Kazaros in his comment regarding the suspended issue: "Having in mind that all of us depending on our “activities” in RG are helping some people to do their business or at least to have a remunerated job, one may ask who will make harm to his own business? Another point is that I hope that the administration of RG catch these advice and change the negatives into positives, let's raise our expectations!

Dear friends, RG informed me that a question I posted on 30 March, and modified by editor on 31 March was brought to their attention as not research related. It was on what mode of transport do you researchers prefer to use when attending research conferences. I posted that question because there have been several aircraft 'incidents'. I was informed on 9 April, but I didn't respond immediately, because the question IS research related! And already modified by editor.
Then recently, one new question was considered 'general interest', not research related. For this, I was happy to rephrase the question, and improve it. So there are complainers on RG...

Dear @Miranda, I think that it is okay that when any question raised by somebody as inappropriate that the administration discus the issue with the contributer but it is not acceptable to block the account.

Prof Abedallah, RG warned me that the 3rd time will mean that my account is suspended. So what areyour tthoughts about this, friends? Who do you think are the ones who complain about us, about me, and did it behind my back? That person could have just asked me to rephrase my question. I would do it, if needed.
And can a question about RESEARCH PRESENTATION OR CONFERENCE be said to be not related to research? And is a question that is already modified by an editor something to complain about?
Dear @Miranda, I think that the proper act to be done in case of complaints is that: Administration of RG should first check whether these complains make sense or not; if they see that these complaints are acceptable thereafter they discuss the issue with the contributor to find a solution to the issue and must not be on the costs of the contributor and might be enough to get explanations to the complaints. All of this, or whatever, should not have any consequences against the commenter(contributor). Contributions should be highly appreciated by RG.

The story sounds to me as censorship. At least it is disrespectful. Lets hope that the manager or managers of RG will correct the situation. Otherwise, I will not be surprised to see more successful competitors.
It becomes more and more entertaining. It is a strange situation. In any case the staff of RG should be the main responsible. May be they should have a psychologist amongst them. It is clear that there should be space for everybody.

RG is a media for science & dedicated to researchers . Personally , I consider that RG gives an individual identity to researchers . The researcher can place his published articles & also unpublished articles & data , as datasets . He can participate in Q & A sessions & express his personal views . He has access to all new publications & can review articles . He is also given an individual RG score , which he can improve upon . We can see the face of the researcher & also his overall contributions & his favourite articles . I consider RG researcher centric , giving recognition & respect to individual researchers . In an era where , business icons , cinema stars , politicians & sports persons are considered the heroes of society , RG has reminded society the important role played by researchers .
Prof Abedallah and Friends, I don't understand why I am asked by RG not to ask questions of general interest. Once, Martin Kovar also said, are we expected to be thinking of research only, produces 'tons of research' and ask only research related questions?
This question on RG, I consider as FINE. But is it a question of general interest, since our research isn't about RG? Congratulations that it has stayed visible so long! But I had a question on RG and so did Ratan, and my question is hidden from view to most of you. What can you share on this matter?
RG is a tool:
1)to exchange knowledge between you and other who are more experts than you
2)to test new hypotheses and save time: you can post your idea and not wait maybe for years to publish it in a journal
3)to publish your work fast, although it has not the option of a DOI
4)to find people that you could collaborate and be co-authors
5)to do a quick survey for the field that you are interested in
RG is a social media like others, but it tries to be a scientific one.
Time will show us if it will succeed.
PS Except RG there exists also academia.edu, so a competition...

Just to add that I essentially regard RG as a scientific social media through which researchers interact (create, share or exchange information and ideas). Overall, I personally find it to be just about the same as other social media....
RG is an enormous library of papers in different states with personally identified authors. There is also the possibility of interacting for discussing general ideas or concepts. For me it is a fantastic place that I am very grateful to the people devoted to create, to mantain it or to improve it if possible. Thank you!

Actually I am very grateful to people who maintain this virtual area and I am sure that in the future the free amount of knowledge within it will be huge. Have the oportunity to discuss or contact people with an idea close to your field of knowledge around the world could be a wonderful tool.
There is not only a library with the papers in shelves, but also an inteligent system which remembers your contacts and your scientific interests for making the refreshment needed to keep you on the wave of the actvity which surrounds you. For the moment this is not exclusive but important. Thank you again!
RG is a unique experience for me. It has a minimum of bureaucracy and gives an opportunity for the person to be seen and felt – for one person to wind up caring about another’s work and vice versa. Reflecting on my own experience, I would say that it starts by posting papers and materials you care about, then progresses to caring about certain questions posed and those who are entertaining them, and finally by learning in various ways that there are others who care about and value your work, and sometimes even ask you to help edit or further clarify an element of their own work. This happened to me recently. A researcher that I had gotten to know over the past year was given the opportunity to write an article for a well-thought-of journal. His editor came back with a number of structural and other issues. My friend asked me to help. Using my specialized technical writing skills, I showed my friend how to solve most of these problems simply through inserting some higher-order headings to group the lower-order topics and serve as platforms for commentary. He didn’t have to restructure the whole paper. My experience with him over the year on and through RG made him seek me out and made me care about helping him to actualize his fine paper.
RG has emerged as an easy open access medium available fro researchers to share their ideas and publications. Its easy and fast medium to communicate.
Still free of blogs and other social media exchange items.

In my opinion, RG is an academic networking, when you can built your own team with other researchers from all Countries. It is a good opportunity for each, to communicate, to change ideas, and to share it.
RG, to me, it is a GAUGE of my knowledge,because when I read, I normally see my stupidity level! When I comment/write for sure one reply means some steps ahead, academically and professionally! With this,my research sail is real becoming a happily journey!

For me RG is a forum of meeting and sharing different ideas, way of thinking, problem issues, specific scientific and technical questions, professional problems etc.. as a think tank.
RG gives us the opportunity to be transparent not blind and discuss ones experiments and ones quotes and ones humanity, as well to pose significant questions of science behavior in different areas and meet with different colleagues' experiences. Hope that RG will raise up to real collaborative schemes and destructs frontiers in front real cooperation (ie when a researcher has not sufficient tools in his lab to advance his research, may be other labs in the world could offer him/her the opportunity to perform his/her experiments or research or modeling...), for science benefit....

For me, one of the most exciting aspects of RG is how naturally it is to hear and talk with such dazzling geographical diversity -- and all as individuals. I have come to learn about people, and their institutions, from Austria, Jordan, UAE, Serbia, England, Russia, and Australia, to mention a few. Very interesting questions are being pursued, including moral and human ones that go well beyond one's technical specialties but underlie the sciences and the scientific life. Dear Fausto, when our questions are deleted, we are very sad. But in a short time, we will recover and be more objective. On RG, a lot of capital letters, certain symbols like exclamation marks, will give the impression that we are shouting. I also remember: 'a soft answer turns away wrath'.
Yes @Taiar, RG could become a fine platform for not only to students,but for researchers, professors ...to learn and improve their knowledge, big knowledge database, portal where you can establish communication and interactions with other researchers, start a joint research project, get a new friends, ....
