I have come across the term truncated N terminal various times in several papers. I want to know the importance of truncation and what it means. Why truncation is used.
Truncated implies that it is shorter than the expected, or expressed full length protein amino acid sequence.
The truncation may be due to a specific protease activity, chewing on the protein and therefore, resulting in a shorter fragment of protein. It may also be a non-specific degradation event due to handling of the protein.
In summary, truncated proteins are common and this event takes place naturally or during purification or handling of the protein.
