In certain disciplines the open accesses journals are quality journals and recognized as such by the academic community in this area. It is more so in the sciences, and less so in the social sciences, so it seems that before publishing in an open access journal you should check who is the publisher of this journal, and what type of articles are published in this journal, but most of all, check in the journal site if it charges article processing fees.
All scientific works should have free access! This will never happen! In the last discussion, scientists said they were working out curiosity, not for MONEY! DO YOU HAVE IT?
Slavoljub Hilčenko I agree with you that all scientific works should have free access, but I think not all open access journals need publication fee!! However, publication fees in some journals very expensive compared to other journals I don't know why?
It is invitation for plagiarism, quality of paper may suffers, if published in an open access they (scientists ) not get money. But good scientific works have to prefers open access mode journals because the work published in it get global visibility and have more choices to cite by more people.
Open access means it is free to public. However, publishing process (and there is no exception even in a case of online) is costly. Not surprising that in these costs should participate author or his employer. This is a price of the wide range of audience.
Anna Małgorzata Kamińska I totally agree with you, but I need to know why some journals have expensive fees than others? also, why some open access journals don't need publication fees?
Open access journal good for broader viewership, open to maximum and critical comments more. The higher cost of journal for publication of an article could be due to high ranking of journal and might be more fee to be paid for peers review.
@Mahender but some open access journals have expensive fee and not have strong index. Also, not all open access journals give the reviewers fees for review.
“Open access journals” are the results of widespread use of Internet and on-line publishing. Most of these journals are available in print form too. They have several plus points such as enabling free access to research papers, lowering the costs for research in both public funded institutions and private concerns, and improving access to information for the public. Probably, a major advantage to the authors is higher citation rates, which will be reflected in both journal and author impact factors.
Open access is achieved in three ways. (1) Many open access journals are made free utilizing the subsidy they get through grants from funding agencies. Subsidized journals are financed by an academic institution, professional society, or a funding agency. In such cases, neither the authors nor the readers pay any money for publishing and accessing the papers. (2) Some open access journals do so by accepting page charges or charges per article from authors. For example, PLOS (Public Library of Science) journals demand specified fees for an article. (3) A third method is to publish the articles in a traditional subscription based journal like Nature, and after a certain period (six months or so), make their paper freely available on the Internet by self-archiving it in their institutional repository (IR).
In my opinion every scientific journals should be published in open access. I think you can earn on publishing a journal or write an article to it. This is the answer why some people don't like open access.
If you have no idea what something is about, then it is about the money.
Open source journals will increase the visibility and accessibility of your work by everyone, while commercial ones defer access to your paper and thus, slow down possible citation rate.
Open access is cost free, globally visible, available through creative common licenses, peer reviewed etc. researchers over the world should prefer to promote the research work ...
I will suggest everyone to publish his work in open access journals so that it becomes visible for every interested researcher. If we publish our work, why do we publish? First we need to answer this question to ourselves. We want to contribute something to the society. Then why not, it should be available for everyone. Best of luck everyone!!
In case the quality of publication is assured, then no matter about the Journal. If the paper sounds good, then will create audiance regardless of the Journal it was published.
The quality of OA journals can vary widely.Consider whether the journal is included in the Directory of Open Access Journals, an authoritative list of OA journals.
Quality varies significantly in Open Access Journals. There are a lot of fake/predatory open access journals. If quality of the journal is good, has good editorial board and cost can be managed then anyone should go for it. It will provide free access to everyone.
If the question is visibilty of our research work, then all Journals are having the option to make the paper open access. I think some prefer these open access Journals because of fast publications and rate of rejections are lower than the other Journals. I think the high quality should be a concern for all researchers, rather than fast publications.
I prefer open access. A lot of my articles are theoretical so I like them to be open access so I can get feed back from other people. Open access also ensures that one can post one's papers on forums like RG which is a truly great way of getting people to comment on one's work. Comments help me see one own papers through the eyes of another which is always enriching and helps me expand my own ideas or correct them when it seems that others encounter difficulty in grasping what I am expressing.
I have nothing against open acess journals: it is supposed that research results reach as many people as possible; is a good thing. Almost all of my publishing are in open access, and should continue to do so.
