This is interesting query. I think there are two ways to think about it. Advantages of advancement telecommunication technologies are more but youths, college students all the time, they will be on mobile, they will be chatting or browsing irrelevant things. instead of taking use of technology, they are misusing it and percent of misuse is double than proper use

Before "Advanced telecommunication technologies" people could only communicate with people in other countries through letters due to international call costs, which in some way made (some) people avoid leaving their home towns or native countries (unless if really needed) in fear of losing proper communication with loved ones. In addition, in the past, the only sources of news were local newspapers and TV channels, which inevitably lead to bias, and kept people stuck in silos or boxes, not knowing what else is out there. Nowadays, due to advancement in telecommunication and IT technologies, (many) people are aware of worldwide news and are able to learn anything about anywhere easily through search engines on their personal (internet connected) devices. You can now find someone who likes Japanese culture, Indian music, Arabic food, European style ... etc, also, people travel more, live abroad more and so on. So basically what i'm trying to say is that technology is probably the main reason the world is now more open and multi-cultural. Furthermore, technology has made people think more critically and ask more questions, as now everything can be easily cross validated/checked at the same moment the information is obtained by checking on the internet.
