Open-cell metal foams have been known since the fifties and are studied in the field of heat exchangers for the last twenty years. Foam exchangers are used in rare applications such as race cars but are not yet industrialized. Do you think that the use of these materials is accurate to enhance energetic performance of a cooling system (increase thermal performances, reduce pressure drop, reduce weight and cost)?
We work on cooling circuits dedicated to particules physics detectors (CERN-ATLAS -IBL). We don't use metal open cells foams but we are currently using graphite foams (Allcomp K9) to improve heat exchange and in the same time reduce material density.
