Both antibiotics and mycotoxins are secondary metabolites. Antibiotics serve the producing fungus or bacteria in competing with others. Mycotoxins has no known role, however, they might weaken the receiving host thus providing a higher chance of proliferation.
Mycotoxins are naturally produced from fungus due to wet environment favoring toxins production while antibiotics are man-made and acts against harmful organisms in the body, lowing the immunity of the host. Access of both are dangerous, causing organism resistance and carcinogenicity.
While all mycotoxins are of fungal origin, not all toxic compounds produced by fungi are called mycotoxins. The target and the concentration of the metabolite are both important.
