Recently, I setup an MFC experiment, and the OCV fell to zero after showing a certain value for 8 mins. Is it because of no biofilm formation? Thank you in advance for your answers.

This can happen due to various factors. Firstly, make sure that the microbial community you are using is exoelectrogenic. secondly, use organic materials such as synthetic wastewater as a source of carbon and nitrogen. In addition, ensure the efficiency of the electrodes, current collecting wire and proton exchange membrane (PEM).
It is suggested to use carbon felt as electrode and titanium or copper wire as current collector and Nafion membrane as proton exchange membrane.
The process of electron transfer by microorganisms is not a natural phenomenon.Generally, these mechanisms can be divided into two types: direct electron transfer (direct contact between the cell surface and
the electrode) and indirect electron transfer (through the
so-called electron mediators) (Yujin Cao.et al)
For direct electron transfer, electrons should reach the outer membrane of the cell and physical contact between the outer membrane and the anode is required. Electricigens form bioflms or electrically conductive nanowires(pili and fagella) on the anode surface .For indirect electron transfer, electron transfer is
achieved with the help of low molecule, soluble mediator.

Therefore, the only way to transfer electrons is not to form a biofilm.
