I am characterizing a strictly anaerobic bacteria cultured from the intestinal tract of pigs.  This bacteria is unable to grow using fucose as its sole carbon source, however, every culture that I add fucose to has a distinct fruity smell (after incubation).  The best way I can describe it is fruit loops.  I have measured the VFA's resulting from these cultures by GC but I don't detect anything substantially different between the cultures that have fucose and those that do not.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!
