Dear @Miranda, money is the key issue in Serbia. Of course, technology skills infusion is needed, as @Krishnan mentioned, but new educational technology/equipment is needed also! Continuing education programmes are must for this goal!

Thanks Profs Mahfuz and Kamal.  Now in my country, we are seeing the necessity of not separating school education from higher education anymore.  Wherever there is a breakdown in education, it is hard for teachers and profs to take needed remedial action.  When there is breakdown of ethical practices, it's just as bad.

Thanks Dr Shanmugasundaram, Prof Marwan and friends.  I'm glad that in India, teachers are 'strong in teaching methodologies and various strategies of teaching.'  Yes, I also observe here that Indian friends who came from Tamil schools took some time to improve communication skills in English.  Just as you say, 'Those who have studied in vernacular language medium find it difficult to fit into the Higher Education courses because of their poor writing and in communication skills.'

Yes, that's why I'm asking this question.  A good friend has told me that teacher education is a century behind time.  But is that true of your country and communities, my friends?  A teacher is always a role model for the students we teach.  Are our practices based on research?

The answer is yes for your first two questions. As to the third and fourth, many students are very energy saving when acquiring knowledge and skills. I think change of way of life, change of demands of society towards students are desperately needed. The most important would be the dissemination of the presently lacking ethics and solidarity. Not the teacher training should be altered but the human attitudes should be ameliorated.

Teachers have a moral responsibility to teach what is RELEVANT.  'We cannot solve today's problems with the knowledge of yesterday.'

Any one, who is to be engaged in teaching, ought to study basic education courses or to better have a degree in education. Unfortunately many teachers in high schools or in universities in various specializations have acquired their jobs according to their bachelor or master or PhD degree in sciences or arts only with very few who undertook educational courses or degrees. To be prepared for detailed knowledge in a certain science is different from being prepared to teach this knowledge efficiently. This is one of the reasons behind the "escape" from studying sciences in some countries.

In another forum we wondered if teaching was a mission. I think it is, and that teachers are born rather than becoming. However, the natural talent to be honed by experience and updated on the basis of needs in relation to the changing times and situations. In other words, a good teacher must be added to the natural skills, the ability to "read" internal and external situations and know how to renew with a constantly updated. However, a "bad teacher" will remain so precisely because of these qualities missing.

If the question was in relation to India, my country, I would say that teachers must  be made to be motivated and held accountable for teaching the students. In the government-run schools, which  most lower middle and poor students attend, the teaching standard is far below the acceptable level. The system should be so designed that the teachers themselves become continuous learners so as to be more effective teachers.

'  In my country, for years and years, the Ministry had said that teachers with a Masters or PhD will get another pay scale.  But only recently it was implemented for new teachers with PhD.  But those of us who had got our PhD before that didn't get any benefits at all.  We are lifelong learners who didn't look upon material reward.

By the short entrance examination, creative ability could not be evaluated enough.  The evaluation of the creativitiy should be done after spending a time in the university.  

The situation of teacher education is still better in the country and can also be compared to international standards but secondary and vocational teacher training situation needs drastic regulation and change. Over the last few decades the teacher education has been severely criticized for being very theoretical and obsolete. Teacher education system is strongly evolving so that quality of teachers in India improved. The curriculum of teacher education is being severely revised since 1998. In this internet age, the use of IT and computer should be used for training teachers and the curriculum now also advocates the use of internet to be used by teachers for teaching students. Teacher education is important as efficient teachers can shape an efficient future society. Teachers can greatly influence young minds and hence it’s important that competent teachers are recruited for the gullible and vulnerable young minds
