One possibility that occurs is to bring back the question of what it means to be educated in todays world, to look at what truly serves students to be prepared to both live well in the moment, and to be prepared to live in a future we can't predict. The current structure is based on an industrial model that has little to do with the actual real world and reduces children to standardized blocks. What other models of education would better serve them?

1. All post primary teaching would now be in home schools so that children and parents have no time lost to travel, or money lost from exorbitant fuel costs.

(This is except for the weekends when the children would play sport and take part in extra-curricular activities.)

2. All teaching would be 'delivered' electronically and be from the best teachers in the world.

3. The syllabi would be global, and texts would be globally admistered and standardised. The best material will be commissioned and distributed nationally.

4. Only local languages, laws and customs would be taught nationally. Mother tongue education will be truncated earlier in the pupil's life.

5. The children would be in electronic contact with their cohorts (pen-pals) in all countries.

6. The children would have infinite choice in their subject material and depth of study. In primary school, the choices will be made by the parents, and by both the children and the parents at high school stage.

7. The education system will transform from individual delivery to mediated help.

8. Children will find that student-oriented learning and peer group learning play a greater part in their learning. Self-directed and discovery-based education will flourish.

9. Teaching will be across the curriculum.

10. Learning will be fun.

11. The curriculum will shift to modern methods used in commerce, industry and practice. For example, we can assume that the child will enter a world where there is always a spelling checker to catch the odd typo.

12. Regulatory matters will be tightened and adjusted for the global teach.

13. The quality assurance systems in accrediting the education will now focus less on establishing the correctness of the content, but more on ensuring that learning really is taking place at the level of the individual by means of travelling field inspections by teachers.

14. Delivery in Standard English will ensure that the children match the needs of the international marketplace.

Only three: play, play and more play. Playing is the first step towards learning.

Aim all teaching towards developing self-confidence and an enquiring mind. Encourage asking "why and why not" and in developing skills at observing, finding and analysing information. SELF-confidence rather than false confidence where every action child is externally rewarded such as every child a winner and gets a medal, every drawing is praised and displayed and the goal for the child becomes to please others and to meet the expectations of others in a position of power (parents, teachers, older children).

We need to redefine the mission of public education.

Many years in the past, the three missions of higher education were to prepare for employment, to make one a good citizen, and personal growth and development.

Today, the second and third have almost completely been lost and education/higher education is conceived ONLY as preparing workers for productive employment resulting in economic development. I think this is something lost.
