I am trying to figure out what the SEM tells us about the GO (4 mg/mL, monolayer content > 95%). Could anyone explain what are those "strands" on the SEM? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Looks like multiple layers rather monolayer of your GO. You could check the heights. It would be interesting to break the substrate with coating to check the side sections. You would have more clues what is going on with your GO coatings.
This is a really thick layer of GO flakes. These white strands are the wrinkles of flakes lying on the top. I measured it many times using SEM and even using AFM.
It looks like the GO is of multiple layer. If you want to calculate the layer number you can use XRD data and Scherrer equation. If you still want to reduce the layer numbers you can check some experimental parameters. Follow this below article for calculation of layer numbers.
