A recent publication from SETI seems to suggest that it is possible to find connection between archaeology and interstellar communication (file included).
My question: What can we learn about interstellar communication from archaeological findings? Your comments are welcome.
This book takes the position that IF we ever receive a radio signal from another intelligent species in the galaxy, it may be very difficult to find the meaning of the message. It makes sense that we might have to call in experts in many sciences to help discover the meaning.
I agree that the techniques used by archaeologists to discover meaning in messages and artifacts from the distant human past may be relevant, Such analysis of meaning, however, is still rooted in our understanding of human society and psychology. A message from an alien species may have none of these common underpinnings.
Even if we learn to decode the message, they may be talking about cultural things that are totally foreign to us.
I think that we had better hope that if we ever receive such a message, it is intended for other species, and therefore contains beginner's tutorials. :-)
