I applied factor analysis and found 4 factors but in the previous studies researchers extraxcted 3 factors from same scale. What if I limit the number of factors to 3 in SPSS, is it ethical?
Why would you want to do that? Suppose that you have found something new and investigate it. perhaps you will make a discovery!!! Best, David Booth

What is the reason of doing factor analysis? Validity? of the instrument which was validated in some other context? If so then why are you worried?There wont be any problem of this contradiction.
Thanks Muhammed. I dismissed some items and number of factors are 3 now. But item-factor relationship is not suitable with theory,I mean their relationship is meaningless. Items are not loaded where they are supposed to be. What do you do in these situations?
Do you have a research plan or are you just making adjustments here and there and noticing that this sometimes gives different results than previous work? Is there an overriding question? David Booth
