A lot of start-ups in India are working in this space. At present, because they are all of recent origin, we do not have adequate large data & historical data. But very soon, in a year or two this space will see an explosion. I'm waiting eagerly for that.

Big data here means taking information from various distinct sources to enhance the capabilities of farmers to make sustainable decisions.
The Data-Driven Bioeconomy project (DataBio) looks to examine the applications of big data in farming, forestry and aquaculture, and how having more information at their fingertips might empower people working in these sectors.
There are 2 factors which are helpful for the farmers and the government in decision making namely:
a. It helps farmers in providing the historical crop yield record with a forecast reducing the risk management.
b. It helps the government in making crop insurance policies and policies for supply chain operation.

Already large benefits are being derived by sharing data like soil conditions, weather, credit behaviour and crop production & productivity status. Agricultural Input companies are also harvesting the data to do target marketing.
