As Ammonium nitrate is banned in many countries, the plant tissue culture laboratories and industrial setups are looking for the most suitable alternative of the AN salt which can fully replace it in the standard composition of MS medium without affective the results.

To the best of my knowledge, ammonium nitrate is banned in many countries only due to its dangerously explosive nature in the solid state. In aqueous solution, ammonium nitrate presents no real danger. However, it is certainly useful looking for alternatives. Dear Mahipal sir, you can use commercial HiMedia MS macroelements (Code TS1068) which contains all components of macroelements of MS medium including Ammonium nitrate. Although some workers have now been used NaNO3 instead of ammonium nitrate. But replacement with other substitutes or NaNO3 may vary in growth response. Therefore, before using alternatives, there is a need to standarize the nutritional requirement of plant tissues in any tissue culture study and also need to compare the growth response with original MS (as a control).

Actually, we are trying to use all possible alternatives and testing on different plant cultures. NaNO3 too we will try. Please let me know if you think about any other possible substitutes.
