Dear Doctor Manisha Naithani , thank you for this interesting discussion.
My thoughts & views on reverse mentoring are....
Getting inputs from younger generation is a great idea. They not only bring fresh idea, new knowledge, but also exhibit exuberance. Seniors (in any official capacity) learning from Juniors bring a better balance in the functioning of the organization. The ego " I " will vanish. But, the success of reverse mentoring always depends on the Officials holding higher posts/designations.
Report: Why Reverse Mentoring Works and How to Do It Right
Yoganandan G has already written some great points about this topic. In my purview, I have seen that those who prefer to go through reverse mentoring are those who remain learners irrespective of their age, social status, designation in the work place etc. Such people remain young despite their age. So, reverse mentoring may be defined as a tool for being young forever.
It can certainly be used in my work place. As a teacher of Business Management, many a times I come across participants and students who are not only older than me but also more experienced than me. So, there reverse mentoring becomes very handy. Moreover, the nature of Business Management is such as a discipline of study that nobody can be said to be an expert. All of us, who are associated with this subject of study are constantly learning. Many a times this learning comes through reverse mentoring.
Thank you for your appreciation of my reply in this thread.
Regarding the question that you asked me, I think that in most cases our society is hierarchy oriented. Here, seniors are respected because of their seniority. Its not necessarily a merit oriented society. That's why, if we are to practice reverse mentoring then we have to do it depending on our individualistic efforts. It is very difficult to treat reverse mentoring as a social trait.
I don't think it is changing. In a modern day world, politics is of prime importance. Most changes usually arise from within politics. Today's political leadership in many parts of this country are not merit oriented. That's why, it is difficult to popularize reverse mentoring in India.
students are at the centre, as it is supposed to be in the out come based education. The senior students play a pivotal role in learning through patient management, in teaching his/her junior residents and in completing his thesis. So the process is in built, where mentorship has to be in both directions in terms patient care, learning and research activities in day to day life. It has been possible in my practice for years, where we have been literally learning together. It is also a reality that I personally learnt most from my students. What I enjoy most in my life is :being with them. As a teacher I found the best way of teaching is being eager to take the reverse mentorship.
This reverse mentorship in my work place has tremendous effect on patient management. research activities and in learning together.
The process has made me a 'scholar' (life long learner), which otherwise would never be possible.
Dear professor, I am extremely happy to be a part of discussion on this wonderful and to my consideration allmost an integral component of teaching _learning.
As I said, in Medical education reverse mentoring is a part and parcel of the teaching _learning method. But the concepts, extent and utility of the reverse mentoring is not uniforly perceived or practised among the faculty.
So I agree with you, a longitidunal study on this topic will define the current concepts, perception and practice of the faculty. The result of the study may help in developing this crucial component of teaching_learning.
