What are your experiences or recommendations for using consumer-grade EEG devices like OpenBCI or Emotiv in research settings?

Specifically, I am interested in:

  • The reliability of these devices for academic studies.
  • Their suitability for tasks requiring robust signal quality (e.g., event-related potentials, neurofeedback).
  • Practical considerations like software compatibility, ease of use, and community support.

Would you consider these devices sufficient for specific studies, or are there limitations that make clinical-grade EEG systems indispensable? I’d love to hear your thoughts and insights!"

Personal notes:

1. I liked the OpenBCI franchise, but the cortex 3D-printed helmet is really uncomfortable

2. We tried also Muse but it is very limited with just a couple of sensor in the fronto-temporal lobe.
