My main advice would be the follwing:

(1) You are not here to memorize what you learn, but rather to understand, reinvent, and reconstruct everything you learn.

(2) Don't mind raising, say, silly questions. There are not silly questions. There are many silly answers.

(3) If you want to get ahead raise, say, irritating questions, that is, questions whose answer leads us to a better knowledege of the unknown.

(4) Note that to look for the unknown is, say, the mission of all professors and students.

(5) Look more at what I do than at what I say as a professor.

(6) What I most wish is that in the end you can dispense with me, that is, you come to overcome what I know.

Of course, this is a short answer to your interesting question.

The study is focused on the fact that the time is very short for the first class, especially the daily follow-up, the daily study and the utilization of all the time available and the work of the seminars

1. This is not only the place and time to learn and acquire subject knowledge and get graduated, but also many other things like building relationship with fellow professors and fellow class-mates

2. Keep your mind very open to change the way you look at things and accept the people as the way they are and as the way they are not...

3. It is fine to skip some classes and watch cricket, football, movie of your interest etc...after all it is your life...you have got only one life to live...live it to the fullest....enjoy each and every moment...

4. Spare some quality time to play games and sports with your friends....it is very important to keep yourself physically healthy and fit...it is a prerequisite to healthy mind...

5. Develop some good habits....playing games, visiting library and reading books, visiting gym regularly....it helps to combat the stress effectively...

Thank you very much for calling our attention to the idea that professors and students are human beings before they professors and sudents. As you say, it is impotant to live our life at each moment. Note also that schools are mainly concerned with the true. The good and the beatiful should be also pursued, namely if we want to be citizens of the world.

Really very informative answer, thanks a lot for sharing your kind point of view. Every thing in our life is starting with hard step(s) including preparing M.Sc. or Ph.D. so we have to create a clear road map and then focusing of the important points and stimulate our minds to do more and more in a different manner. I suggest to establish a symposium for our students at the first day of their studying year to indicate how to start, what are the most important researching tools, generation of ideas, in addition to other writing skills including plagiarism and grammar checking, just a suggestion, by the way I am doing such meeting every year with my students.

When doing a PhD or Masters Degree one should have three qualities. That is determination, optimistic and commitment.

Determination: This is the most essential feature when doing a PhD or Masters Degree. One should be very determine and "should not give up".

Optimistic: This is about positive thinking. "Never think bad things will happen in the future." Threats will come from the environment but if you are a good leader then you can face it.

Commitment: Without commitment nothing can be happened.

Going towards study with determination and ambition. Scientific honesty in all the details of your academic life. Develop a program for hard work. Optimal selection of the subject to be considered. And work on not to expand the search excessively distracting the student and then reach the point hindering the completion of research.

Ýour idea of establishing a symposium for our students at the first day of their studying year to indicate how to start, what are the most important researching tools, generation of ideas sounds good to me. As you suggest, scientific writing is a key, albeit often overlooked, issue in Master and Ph D programs. As a reviewer and author, I now of papers that were rejected because of language problems. As Wittgenstein once remaked, when language "goes on holiday" problems arise. That is, we should be careful about scientific writing such that it, say, does not bewitch our thought and reasoning. Like our colleague Anuradha, I think that when doing a PhD or Masters Degree students should have three qualities: determination, optimistim, and commitment. If we are not determined people we often gave up our goals; If we are not optimist, we may be tempted to give up even before starting any activity; and if we are not commited to pursuing our ideals we may give them up once any problem arises. To my understaning, in addition to these prerequisites, or even more important than them, is students' ability to raise irritating questions, that is, questions whose response leads us to a better knowledge of the unkown. As C.S. Pierce once noticed science comes, say, from the "irritation of doubt". Wittgenstein also remarked that where there is no place for doubt, certainty does not make any sense either. I do not think much of those who have a lot of certainties, and no doubt. This brings to my mind the Greek philosopher Socrates' statement: What I know is that I know that I know nothing.

My sincere advise to PG students is

1. To get command on their subject

2. To review the literature to select the topic

3. Once topic is decided make synopsis

4. Concentrate on your research work

5. Start writing the initial chapters of your thesis

6. Complete your thesis and submit it to your supervisor

At the early stages, be creative and have fun with your thesis/dissertation. Think outside the box and to read and explore as widely as possible. My second tip is to write as much as possible, my first year and a half I wrote an annotated bibliography, which was notes of every single thing I read. I was good writing practice for the lit review, it helps with memory, and bits and chunks are in my thesis.
