What are the theoretical similarities and differences between pain catastrophizing and trait anxiety? Further, how would each construct uniquely influence an observer's detection of facial pain expression?
To get the ball rolling:
Catastrophizing has been described as the cognitive component of anxiety and depression (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). Both pain catastrophizing and anxiety are characterized by attention to threat, over-emphasis of the probability of a catastrophic outcome, and rumination about the worst possible consequences (Beck & Clark, 1997; Sullivan et al., 1995; Turner & Aaron, 2001). Where the two constructs may differ is that catastrophizing is a cognitive set while anxiety is an emotion. The tendency to catastrophize (including catastrophizing about pain) could lead to numerous emotions, one of which is anxiety. Further, anxiety is characterized by autonomic hyperarousal and trait anxious individuals may be more likely to interpret physical sensations in a catastrophic manner leading to greater threat appraisal.
Please share your thoughts as I am very interested in how these two constructs are related to pain perception.
