I have been completing my PhD in a basic science laboratory, which unexpectedly led me to an fascination with bioinformatics. While I have been afforded many opportunities to learn the tools (online forums such as these), I have no idea whether it is feasible to operate a lab using in silico techniques, how to keep the lab funded, what are the big costs associated with this field, etc... Does anyone have experience or thoughts on this from experience?
The best strategy is to combine both in silico and experimental tools, that will open to you a broad spectrum of journals to publish and will increase the scope of your research. Also, the in silicio techniques are often uses to rationalize the resources to be used in experimental assays, so combining both you can prove this.
