It depends on the nature of the amendment. To provide you with an useful answer, some information is needed. Is it organic? For example, sewage sludge amendments require control of heavy metal solubility and pH, and biological indicators of fecal bacteria.

If you type: soil amendments general evaluation on google you get addresses for scientific papers which give comments on particular issues.
Personally, I believe that most of the processes that favour soil particles to join into stables aggregates are lead by the presence of a healthy biocenosis which is difficult to create unless mimicking nature, allowing for a soil ecosystems when mycorrhizae can produce glomalin and worms do their best. But if you add much nitrates, phosforum tec. there is no need for a plant to get into symbiosis with mycorrhizae. And creating a symbiosis requires time (more than 5-7 months so you will never get is with an annual crop.
From my personal experience I can say that even what is usually considered a compost of good quality can have enough sodium to act as a dispersant even at low doses of applied compost.

The problem on this issue is that most publications are in local technical bulletins. I never saw any review paper written on soil amendments. The fact that most is in local bulletins and local literature is because the strategy to follow is heavily linked to local climate and soil characteristics. I cannot help you much. All I know is linked to sodium and dispersible soils. There is a lot of literature on gypsum in arid and semiarid soil:

Sorry for being much helpful but I am not an agricultural engineer: I work on soil erosion, slope hydrology, badlands dynamics, vegetation behaviour and soil amendment is to me another of the many aspects that characterise the slope dynamics
Obviously, there are some many methods for amending soils, Soils can be amended either by Organic material or Inorganic materials such as gypsum, sulphur, Zeolite and Polyachrilamide (PAM). they maintain soil structure and prevent soils from erosion.
regarding to amount of amendments, I reckon to decide about quantity, you should apply according to erosive factor.
