I am studying the mechanics of needle-tissue interaction for steerable needles. However, I have a question regarding the tissue properties that most people used to model soft tissue. Considering the fact that during needle insertion, failure occurs at the tissue, why do most needle steering papers consider the shear modulus or young's modulus of the soft tissue? How should we take the failure into consideration?
