I think, your analysis related to tour goals. If you require the traditional analysis, you must define the parameters based on physical , chemical and biological characteristic. If, your goal is determine status of river to  accept pollution from different effluent, you must survey on the streeter-phelps equation parameters such as Kr (reoxygenation rate constant)  and Kd (deoxygenation rate constant) and Dt (DO deficite in different times) for drawing the Sag curve and finding the critical time or local of the river and etc. Also you should define the standard sampling site in different points of the river and having a good program to take sample in defined time, (some of them daily, some weekly, some monthly , some seasonally and some every six month or yearly) for a data analysis bank of the river.

For river water the main chemical constituents for the analysis are pH, TDS, Specific conductivity, TH, TSS, F, NO3, Na, K, Ca, Mg, SiO2, Cl, SO4, HCO3, DO, COD and BOD. Trace elements. Physical and Bacreriological analysis and many more.

It is also important that the use to which the river water will be put is clearly defined so that the relevant parameters only are analysed for. This is to add to the submissions above.

It depend on your goal. If you are thinking about just to know pollution measuring BOD, COD, DO are important, but if you are thinking the quality of water for consumption for example drinking water usually EC and.. are important.

I concur with above comments that such research parameters depends on your research goal and objectives.... if it on the broad scale, you must consider the full water quality indices for surface waters taking cognizance of Physical, Chemical and Biological/ and Bacteriological parameters of concern as far as the river system is concerned. Also to help, you must know the natural and anthropogenic indices of pollution to the river by establishing  the contamination and pollution tendency of the river in question, by its use, location, catchment, and things like that. finally you refer the results with the specified uses which the river assists with that will help you in the discussions

To assess water quality in River Nile, you have to consider physical, chemical and biogical characteristics. Examples of important parameters; pH, turbidity, BOD, COD, ammonia, feccal coliform and heavy metals. 

Dear Ahmed Sir, Its ok but what are the ranges for toxicity or acceptable level for feeding backgrounds eg, animals, fishes, microbes, plankton, benthos, algae etc.

For assessing water quality and pollution levels, I recommend the following parameters to be measured in water; pH, turbidity, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, salinity, total phosphorus, total nitrogen, DO, BOD, COD, toxic heavy metals (e.g. Pb, Cd, Ni, Cr) and crude oil. This will cover the impact of agricultural, industrial and domestic activities on water quality.

Regarding the threshold limit of these parameters in water or others, you will not find all identified in the WHO law or in other laws. You can propose a threshold limit for the non-identified parameters in water and this will be value added. Use the impact assessment to set the limit and verify your result. Correction coefficient analyses between the parameters that their threshold limits are identified and the non-identified ones are helpful for this.

I think several research parameters are there for river quality analysis. It depends upon the purpose of use. CPCB's 5 class prescribed parameters for inland surface water can be considered for the same.
