A good supervisor can guide the accepted candidate through hell, without getting burned. The effective and efficient supervisor can distinguish clearly between project topic and candidate, i.e. knows where the improvements have to be made ! Must be an excellent pedagogical expert (learning partner), not necessarily a specialist on the project topic. As the ancient saying goes: give me a study partner or death.
A good supervisor who creates a comfortable studying/searching environment for his students. Also he or she must to be a good leader of his or her students.
Successful supervisors know what is going on in their organization. They have knowledge about objectives and plans, their product, organizational hierarchy etc. It is necessary for them to store all this information otherwise they will not know where to look for information about all these matters. They also possess technical knowledge such as production technology, basic principles of management like planning, organizing, directing, motivating and controlling. But these are not the only qualities and skills a manager, leader or decision maker needs to be successful.
Personal qualities:
1.Emotional balance: The supervisor works in situations which involve authority, leadership, meeting targets and deadlines, conflicts etc.
2.Being proactive: The supervisors have some objectives to achieve. They cannot plan everything in advance.
3.Creativity: It means that the supervisor must have the ability to come up with new responses to situations.
4.Mental agility: The supervisor must have the ability to grasp problems quickly, to think of several things at the same time.
5.Self-knowledge: Whatever the supervisor does is affected by their own view of their job and role, objectives, strengths and weaknesses etc.
-Managerial skills:
In order to handle their jobs effectively supervisors require a combination of five key managerial skills. These are classified as technical, human, conceptual, diagnostic and political.
-Technical skill:
Technical skill is proficiency in a specific activity that involves methods, processes, procedures or techniques.
-Diagnostic skill:
Diagnostic skill is the ability to analyze the nature of a problem with people, ideas, things or events. A good diagnosis precedes a recommended solution to a problem (like in medicine or automotive repair or management).
-Political skill:
Political skill is the ability to acquire the power needed to achieve one’s objective. Specific political skills include being able to win others over to your cause.
The supervisor should be a good guide to complete tasks, and meet deadlines. A skilled supervisor is an effective communicator, problem-solver and student motivator. He also need to get the most out of all of his students, to have insight into their strengths, and to have a clear set of expectations and goals.
I think good supervisor should have good communication skill,Diversity and Generational Differences in the Workplace and must be Problem Solving ,Leadership, Critical Thinking, Interpersonal Skills.
The answer given by Dr. Doha M Al Saffar includes almost all the points. But I think a good supervisor should have good ability to write articles in English, otherwise the students will face tremendous difficulties in writing Thesis and Research papers. It may be considered as an extra quality if he/she is attached with any journal to check articles regularly or in online checking of articles of his field of specialisation.Such attachment can be done easily.
A good supervisor should have a vast knowledge of the field to guide the candidates properly. Should have good communication skills, be patient, be available, should not be boosy, should be accommodating and must be timely.
Highly educated, highly experienced, highly humanistic, highly creative one. Unfortunately, this kind of personality is a dangerous competitor for the influential mediocre elite in the corrupt countries.Social adaptant is an ideal.
This question makes me wonder whether an Academic Supervisor and an Industrial Supervisor working in an Industry would require identical set of skills ?
I personally feel that an Academic Supervisor is mainly involved in managing highly educated people and this should be a different ball game compared to that of an Industrial Supervisor working in a Production Unit of an industry.
An Academic Supervisor and an Industrial Supervisor from a Research & Development (R&D) unit of an industry may have similar assignment.
Dear @Doha, my advice was very friendly advice from senior researcher. Thus, instead of word Quoting , you should bring the link of original resource. Then, your answer should appear as complete one, as an academic one.
Effective supervisors know what is going on in their organizations. I think being proactive is one of the main qualities that can make a good supervisor.
Good supervisor should know the lower limits of knowledge and skills, and know the easiest way to get them, and guide the students to get, to be armed with the needed knowledge, skills and attitude.
An effective supervisor is a person who have a deeper understanding of working with people. He/She must have EMPATHY, be FIRM, UNDERSTANDING and must be TECHNICALLY SOUND in the said subject area of supervision. The attitude of been punitive and supressive which is associated with some supervisors must be the thing of the past. The supervisor must have the mind set that, the one to be supervised is going to be guided to do the right thing.
