What are the prospects for a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict 2022, and what steps could be taken to achieve it? I hope for some academic and scholarly answer/ reply.
The was between Russia and Ukraine has been viewed globally as one that is provoked as a result to power struggle among the big power blocs. Regrettably, in a bid to protect and defend her national interest Russia attacked Ukraine leaving in ruins today. To bring about a solution to the war, it calls for a redefinition of sovereignty because that word sovereignty only makes sense when the interests of big powers are involved. This can only be made possible if United Nations can rise to defend weaker states through the strengthening of the sovereignty of all state as contained in the UN laws and resolutions.
Just as Ukraine was under the control of Russia since 1783, during the time of Catherine the Great, Russia sees Ukraine as its own territory, and would not cede control over it for reasons of image, political or military strategy.
A peaceful solution for society could be for the Kyiv leadership to accept a peace agreement that would officially transform Ukraine into a neutral country, but politically it would continue to be controlled by the Kremlin.
This solution has a disadvantage: it would mean the suicide of the current political class.
The solution is doable, as Moldova has demonstrated that it can transform into a European country at the level of governance, institutions, and everyday life, but officially it remains neutral.
