I have recently started a Master course in Earthquake Engineering and I am new to research. I would like to choose a topic in the best area of research in this field of engineering but I am mostly getting confused with it. I was wondering if someone could give me some suggestions.

I don't know if it will help you, but I share with you a result I got from a research I am doing. The figure shows the most frequent word pairs that appear in the Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics journal from a sample of their articles that I took. As you can see, topics such as performance-based design, seismic energy dampers (includes shape memory materials), base isolation or pulse-like earthquakes are constantly touched upon.
I am sure that the best research topic in Earthquake Engineering for the developing world is providing resilience to the existing buildings. I, personally, recommend to use invented, designed and applied by me seismic (base or roof) isolation strategies for seismic retrofitting of the existing buildings. I have already implemented these strategies in several buildings without interruption of their use and without moving people out of the buildings.
I do not agree with recommendation to deal with prediction of the earthquakes. I know what is it and I also know that during the very long period starting from the time when people had applied some devices to record ground motion there were only one or two successful cases of prediction, which means nothing. So, forget about this useless research and work on providing the real earthquake resistance to the buildings.
