One of the active areas in abstract algebra is Alperin Weight Conjecture (AWC) which relates the modular irreducible representation of a finite group G to the weight of G. This conjecture is a generalization of a similar situation in Lie groups and AWC has been realized for certain classes of finite groups such as finite groups of Lie type , symmetric groups and the general linear groups . Concerning (applied) algebra, subjects like algebraic coding theory and cryptography and their applications to IT are recommended.
