The mainstream scientific research which dominates in the field of Economics of sustainable development, it is interrelated to the methods of "ecosystem services valuation" (ESV) and the "circular economy valuation" (CEV). The principal opposition resides to the fact of how different stakeholders, payers and payees, are appreciating the damage of environmental sources caused in economic values and monetary terms.
the questions can be understood in (at least) two different ways: 1) how to make economic systems sustainable, 2) how an economy should be to support environmental sustainability. Sustainability usually is understood in harmonizing economic, social and environmental sustainability. Under such perspective one could understand the question in how to sustain healthy economies. I would see an how to sustain supply and demand, production and consumption.
2. How an economy can support environmental sustainability would depend on how the economy is able to internalize external costs, how an economy can strengthen efficient use of resources, in particular energy, and how and economy supports innovations that have lesser impacts on the environment.
No economy could be imagined without a society, and there's no society existing unless it's under the umbrella of environment. Therefore, sustainable economic development requires direct attention to social and environmental aspects.
In fact, prioritizing the economy focusing on short-term and private/local perspective has caused many global issues such as global warming, resource scarcity, etc.
Governments and intergovernmental organizations can play a key role to solve the problems. And, universities and independent researchers play the key role to inform the governmental decision-makers with profound useful information and strategies.

In my opinion, the key problem is the issue of financing (from public sector sources, from the state budget and private sector sources as part of commercial projects) of innovative pro-ecological reform projects which are the main components of sustainable pro-ecological economic development.
